Closing the register and cashing up

Count the drawer, and find out what the day really did

Opening and closing the register is what turns "money in a drawer" into a number you can actually check. Open with the float you are starting with, sell all shift, then count what is physically there.

The routine

  1. At the start of the shift press Open Register and enter the cash already in the drawer.
  2. Sell as normal — every sale is attributed to that register and cashier.
  3. At the end press Close Register.
  4. Count the drawer and type what you counted, not what you expected.
  5. Read the difference between expected and counted.

Close every shift, not every week

A variance found the same day is usually a specific mistake somebody remembers — change given wrong, a sale rung up twice. The same variance a week later is a mystery nobody can solve.

Each payment method is counted separately, so a card terminal that disagrees with the till cannot hide inside one combined figure.
