The short answer: some cloud tills can’t complete a sale without an internet connection. Find out before your busiest day: on a quiet morning, turn the Wi-Fi off and try to ring up one sale. If it fails, you need a plan — a mobile-data backup, a manual process, or a POS that keeps selling offline and syncs later.
The 5-minute test
- Pick a quiet time and tell your staff what you’re doing.
- Turn off the shop Wi-Fi (or unplug the router).
- Ring up a real or test sale, including taking a card or cash payment.
- Check what happens to stock and the receipt.
- Turn the connection back on and check the sale appears in your reports.
What an offline-capable POS should do
- Keep taking sales and printing receipts with no connection.
- Store each sale safely on the device.
- Sync every sale and stock change automatically when the connection returns — without double-counting.
Card payments still depend on your card terminal’s own connection, so ask your payment provider how their terminal behaves offline.
